The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm hosted their second “Secrets of Science” event which empowers students through fun and educational STEM activities.
Held at the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA Good Neighbor Club in Atlanta, students were led by instructors from Children’s Museum of Atlanta. Activities included a chemistry-based stations to create slime, exploration on the properties of matter, and a cloud station where they learned about the different stages of the water cycle.
Hawks star Dyson Daniels was on site and shared thoughts on the event and inspiring the next generation.
“Being able to connect with the kids and learn about some of the science experiments they’re doing was special,” Daniels said. “And I had a lot of fun. I learned some new things as well. So I definitely enjoyed it. It’s important for us to give back. I like getting these opportunities to connect with students.”
Daniels also gave advice to students.
“It’s important that they follow their dreams, whatever it may be,” he said. “And stay in school and enjoy it, it goes by quicker than you think. So make sure to learn as much as possible and be a good student.”
Regina Feagin, corporate responsibility analyst for State Farm, also discussed the impact of the initiative.
“This is our second installment of our ‘Secrets of Science’ event, where we get the kids together to learn different science experiments,” Feagin said. “So they learn about the weather, they learn how to make slime, they learn the components of how water and chemical reactions come together to make something different. It’s important for us to come back and show that we’re more than just a name. We are here to support the community. We are good neighbors. We have to make a solid foundation for our community with education and safety at the forefront.”
Portia Benbow, director of community impact for the Atlanta Hawks, shared thoughts on the team’s collaboration with State Farm.
“The Hawks and State Farm have been in partnership since 2015 and since then, we’ve opened up 11 Good Neighbor clubs and or gyms,” Benbow said. “And we are at the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA Good Neighbor Club. For me, it’s always exciting to see the kids engage in these kinds of activities. They are genuinely excited to learn. And so being able to help them learn outside of the classroom and really creative and fun ways, is something that we really enjoy doing with both the Hawks and State Farm.”
