The Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia (HBA) volunteered with building industry nonprofit HomeAid Georgia for a HomeAid Care Day on April 4. Members of the Fayette County Board of Realtors also joined the workday to construct walls for a house for Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity.
More than 30 volunteers made very quick work of building the walls, completing the task in less than three hours.
“This was possibly the quickest HomeAid Care Day on record,” said HomeAid Georgia Executive Director Mandy Crater, “It’s amazing what we can do when we all work together!” When fully constructed, the home will be sold to a qualified low-income family through Southern Crescent Habitat.
All lumber and materials were donated by Builders FirstSource in Fairburn, which provided a savings of approximately $3,000 for Southern Crescent Habitat.
“Volunteering to frame walls for a family experiencing homelessness was an incredibly meaningful experience for our association. We weren’t just swinging a hammer; we were helping build a place someone could eventually call home. It felt good to use our time and energy to create something that could truly change someone’s life. Being part of that process reminded our builders how important it is to show up and support others in tangible ways,” said Claudia Cieslar, HBA of Midwest Georgia Executive Officer.
HomeAid Care Days provide free-of charge construction and maintenance for nonprofits that provide housing and services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Since the Care Day initiative’s inception in 2008, HomeAid has completed over 160 of these events providing over $1.5M in savings for nonprofits. The Care Day with the HBA of Midwest Georgia is the first one in the new expanded territory for HomeAid Georgia encompassing the entire state.
