Each week, ArtsATL delivers a critic’s short list of the shows, exhibitions, concerts and events we recommend for the coming weeks within one discipline or venue type in the kaleidoscope of Atlanta arts and culture. Every week, we’ll present a different art form.

June 20

Victoria Christopher Murray is the next author featured in a monthly series of talks by Black authors sponsored by 44th and 3rd Bookseller. She’ll discuss her latest book, the historical fiction novel Harlem Rhapsody, at Buckhead Art & Company (288 Buckhead Ave. NE) at 6:30 p.m. on June 20.

June 25

Join entrepreneur, author and King of Pops founder Steve Carse in conversation with Caroline Ficken in honor of his book, Work Is Fun: Seven Ways a Successful Ice Pop Company Makes Work Meaningful and How You Can, Too. The event happens at the Book Bird in Avondale Estates from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 25.

June 29

Author Rosey Lee will talk about her latest novel, A Gardin Wedding, a story of love, legacy and the power of connection among Black women at a garden party experience in Avondale Estates. Slip into your favorite garden party ensemble for an afternoon of community and conversation from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 29 at 40 Franklin St., Suite 500.

A Cappella Books (208 Haralson Ave. NE) welcomes author Peter McDade for a special afternoon talk and book signing for his novel King Cal. He will appear in conversation with fellow Atlanta-based writer Jessica Handler, award-winning author of The Magnetic Girl, at 3 p.m. on June 29. The former Uncle Green drummer’s latest book focuses on the creative process and the devotion required to choose an uncertain life in music.

July 1

Tiffany D. Jackson will launch her latest novel, Blood in the Water, at 6:30 p.m. July 1 at Brave + Kind Bookshop (722 West College Ave., Decatur). Meet the author, get your book signed and immerse yourself in this murder mystery set on Martha’s Vineyard.

July 8

Charis and the Auburn Avenue Research Library welcome Honorée Fanonne Jeffers in conversation with Jericho Brown for a celebration of Misbehaving at the Crossroads: Essays & Writings. Jeffers’ nonfiction debut explores the journeys and possibilities of Black women throughout American history and in contemporary times. It’s happening at the Auburn Avenue Research Library (101 Auburn Ave. NE, Atlanta) at 6:30 p.m. on July 8.

July 9

Steve Oney’s On Air: The Triumph and Tumult of NPR recounts the history of National Public Radio and reveals the unlikely story of one of America’s most celebrated but least understood media empires. Oney is in conversation with former WSB anchor John Pruitt at the Margaret Mitchell House (979 Crescent Ave. NE) at 7 p.m. on July 9.

July 13

Dan Schlossberg, a lifelong Braves fan who became a sportswriter, will discuss Home Run King: The Remarkable Record of Hank Aaron at the Atlanta History Center at 3 p.m. on July 13. The book traces Aaron’s odyssey from the segregated South to the baseball world revolutionized by Jackie Robinson. 

July 15

A Cappella Books welcomes Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell to Dad’s Garage in celebration of their new book, G.O.A.T. Wisdom: How to Build a Truly Great Business. The founders of Beekman 1802 will appear in conversation with James Beard Award-winning chef Steven Satterfield, co-owner of Miller Union and Madeira Park, at 7 p.m. on July 15 at Dad’s Garage (569 Ezzard St., Atlanta).

July 27

Author Jeff WeissWaiting for Britney Spears is a frenetic, gonzo account of Spears’ historic rise and equally tragic fall. A Cappella Books welcomes the celebrated music journalist for a book signing and a conversation with podcasters Yoh Phillips and Trey Kerby. The event happens at 208 Haralson Ave. NE at 3 p.m. on July 27.

July 29

Charis and the Georgia Center for the Book welcome Mia Tsai in conversation with L. D. Lewis for a discussion of The Memory Hunters, a sapphic, dark academia-adjacent novel set in a climate-troubled future. It happens from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 29 at the Decatur Library at 215 Sycamore St.

August 2

Decatur writer Bret Witter’s Remember Us: American Sacrifice, Dutch Freedom and A Forever Promise Forged in World War II (written with Robert M. Edsel) was called “An intimate, moving look at the war that extracts deep meaning from the carnage and loss” by Publishers Weekly. FOSSL and Bookmiser will host Witter at the Sandy Springs Library (395 Mount Vernon Highway NE) at 2 p.m. on August 2.

August 7

People Like Us is the new novel by Jason Mott, the author of the 2021 National Book Award winner and bestseller Hell of a Book. Join the author at 7 p.m. on August 7 in the Inman Park Church sanctuary for an evening celebrating his new book about two Black writers who are trying to find peace and belonging in a world that is riven with gun violence.
