ATLANTA — Peter Hubbard won the Democratic primary runoff for the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) District 3 race, defeating Keisha Sean Waites, according to unofficial results on Tuesday(July 15). Hubbard will now face Republican incumbent Fitz Johnson in the general election on Nov. 4.

Hubbard, founder of the Georgia Center for Energy Solutions, earned 58.18% of the vote (66,084 votes) statewide, while Waites, a former state legislator and Atlanta City Council member, received 41.82% (47,501 votes), according unofficial results posted by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office.

The runoff was prompted after no candidate received a majority vote in the initial Democratic primary. Although Waites led in that round, she failed to surpass the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff.

On Tuesday, Hubbard led the race in metro Atlanta, capturing majorities in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties. Waites carried only Clayton County.

Election results are expected to be certified and made official in a few days.

The Georgia Public Service Commission, a five-member body, regulates the state’s utility providers, including electricity and natural gas. Commissioners oversee rate-setting for consumers and approve major infrastructure projects such as power plants, grid improvements, and pipeline expansions.

Democrat Alicia Johnson won the primary District 2 seat and will face Republican incumbent Tim Echols in November.
