DEKALB COUNTY, GA—Arabia Mountain High School is mourning the death of one of its varsity football team members, Mikah King.

The rising sophomore reportedly became ill during football practice on Tuesday and was rushed to the hospital, according to sources. King reportedly passed away around midnight.

EMT arrived at the scene on Tuesday around 9:30 a.m. as the football team was going through practice drills on the field. King, an offensive lineman for the Rams, was sidelined after expressing some level of stress or illness. He reportedly was placed on an IV and transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The DeKalb County School District issued the following statement on Wednesday:

“We were informed today that an Arabia Mountain HS student passed away after experiencing a medical emergency at football practice yesterday. We have grief counselors at the school to support the students and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school during this difficult time,” the district said.

The team’s practice was canceled on Wednesday, as well as a scrimmage game that was scheduled at the school.

Several teachers at the school were crying as they learned about the tragic death of the student.

“He was a great kid. He was a funny kid, a joy to be around and a light,” one teacher said.

A parent told On Common Ground News that King was well-liked and will be greatly missed.

“My kids went to school with him. He was very well liked. I know his family is hurting. He has a twin. We’re just praying for all of them,” a parent said.

Others who knew King expressed their condolences to the football player’s family on social media:
