Each week, ArtsATL delivers a critic’s short list of the shows, exhibitions, concerts and events we recommend for the coming weeks within one discipline or venue type in the kaleidoscope of Atlanta arts and culture.

August 28-September 7

Bridget McCarthy, an ArtsATL One to Watch for fall 2025, will perform a return engagement of her award-winning play Fat Juliet at the Balzer Theater from August 28 through September 7. The one-woman acrobatic show deals with themes such as beauty standards and religion in a humorous way.

August 30

The 48-Hour-Play Festival is at Kennesaw State University this weekend, showcasing the final product after 48 hours of making art. See it on August 30 at KSU’s Stillwell Theater.

September 4-October 5

The Alliance Theatre and Atlanta Opera join forces for Fiddler on the Roof. This watershed collaboration between two of Atlanta’s premier arts organizations is one of many local productions that are reimagining theatrical classics this fall. Fiddler on the Roof opens at the Alliance Theatre on September 4 and continues through October 12.

September 5-7

Shadow Girls Cult: Unraveling, created and performed by multidisciplinary artists Cass Bray and Zane Exactly, is a series of vignettes exploring longing, loneliness, identity and grief. The performance combines shadow puppetry, live animation, human silhouettes, liquid light and projection techniques to create dreamlike, visual worlds that shift between the poignant and the surreal. It will be performed September 5 through September 7 at Kennesaw State University’s Stillwell Theater.

September 5-21

City Springs Theatre Company brings us a new production of The Producers – A Mel Brooks Musical, a massive Broadway hit and winner of multiple Tony Awards. It’s onstage at the Byers Theatre at Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center September 5 through September 21.

September 11, October 11 and November 15

See outdoor free theater on the Avondale Estates Town Green with the new series A Shakespeare Happening featuring three shows: The Tempest on September 11; Macbeth on October 11; and Much Ado About Nothing on November 15.

September 12-28

It’s 1923, and Florence Harding has a problem: her husband, President Warren G. Harding. The Process Theatre Co. is premiering Topher Payne’s latest comedy, A First Lady’s Guide to Killing the President, at Onstage Atlanta September 12 through September 28.

September 13-28

Shakespeare’s popular comedy The Taming of the Shrew has been the inspiration for numerous works that followed, including the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You and the Cole Porter musical Kiss Me Kate. It will be performed at The Shakespeare Tavern from September 13 through September 28.

September 23-27

Back to the Future: The Musical is based on the beloved 1985 film and was adapted for the stage by the film’s creators, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis. The Broadway musical comes to the Fox Theatre September 23-27.

September 26-October 5

Uncorked Conversations, from Atlanta playwright Bill Balzer, is a story about two retirees who develop a deep, authentic friendship in their later years through sitting on the back patio, drinking wine and sharing emotional conversations. Inspired by the playwright’s real-life friendship with his next-door neighbor, Uncorked Conversations shows us that new friendships are possible at any age. See it September 26 through October 5 at Theatrical Outfit’s Balzer Theater.

September 29-October 15

The reunion between a student and his ailing former professor is at the heart of Tuesdays With Morrie, based on the best-selling book by Mitch Albom. It’s being presented by Stage Door Theatre at the Dunwoody Cultural Arts Center September 29 through October 15.

October 2-5, November 13-23

For fans of the experimental, Theater Emory presents My Foot, My Tutor, a wordless performance by Peter Handke, October 2 through October 5, and Peerless, a dark comedy about Asian American twin sisters, November 13 through November 23.

October 8-November 9

A potential deal with the devil drives the new thriller Covenant, coming to the Hertz Stage at the Alliance Theatre and billed as a “striking Southern gothic work” by The New York Times. It runs from October 8 through November 9.

October 8-November 1

It wouldn’t be the Halloween season without The Ghastly Dreadfuls: Ancient Tales with Fresh Blood, which returns to the Center for Puppetry Arts October 8 through November 1.

October 11-12

Dog Man The Musical is based on the best-selling series from Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants and Cat Kid Comic Club. It’s about a hero with the head of a dog and the body of a cop and comes to the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center on October 11 and October 12.

October 14-18

Kimberly Akimbo, winner of the 2023 Tony for Best Musical, is based on David Lindsay-Abaire’s play of the same title and tells the story of a teenage girl who suffers from a condition that rapidly accelerates the aging process. Catch this touring production at the Fox Theatre from October 14 through October 18.

October 23-November 8

Three workers hatch a plan to get even with their sexist boss in 9 to 5 the Musical, based on the classic film and featuring the songs of Dolly Parton. It’s being presented by Out Front Theatre Company from October 23 through November 8.
