Economic and Business Journalist

Position Overview:

The Atlanta Voice is seeking a passionate Economic and Business Journalist to help enhance financial literacy and empower the Black community in Atlanta through engaging, accessible, and informative content. The journalist will be responsible for reporting on financial and business topics, specifically addressing knowledge gaps within the community. This position involves creating compelling and clear content designed to help individuals understand essential financial concepts and make informed decisions. By providing insights into the business world, we aim to empower our community with the knowledge and resources necessary for achieving financial stability and participating confidently in the economy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research & Reporting:
    • Investigate economic trends, business developments, and financial data relevant to the local community.
    • Stay updated on current market trends, emerging issues, and local economic factors.
    • Analyze economic reports, government policies, earnings reports, and other sources of business-related information.
    • Conduct interviews with business leaders, economists, policymakers, and local stakeholders to provide expert insights.
  2. Writing & Content Creation:
    • Write clear, concise, and engaging articles that cover topics like market trends, financial literacy, economic forecasts, and local business developments.
    • Translate complex financial and business concepts into accessible language for a broad audience.
    • Produce breaking news stories, in-depth features, and opinion pieces.
    • Develop engaging multimedia content, such as infographics, videos, and podcasts to enhance storytelling.
  3. Engagement with Experts & Local Communities:
    • Conduct interviews with financial experts, business leaders, and community advocates to offer diverse perspectives and expert advice.
    • Attend community events, business expos, and financial education workshops to identify stories and connect with locals.
    • Partner with local organizations, schools, and businesses to highlight initiatives that foster economic participation and financial literacy.
  4. Investigative Reporting & Story Development:
    • Identify and investigate key economic and business issues that impact local residents and industries.
    • Provide in-depth analysis and investigative reporting on topics that require critical attention.
  5. Collaboration:
    • Collaborate closely with editors, photographers, videographers, and other journalists to ensure accurate, timely, and visually compelling stories.
    • Participate in team brainstorming sessions to identify relevant and impactful news stories.
  6. Multimedia Storytelling:
    • Use multimedia tools such as video, audio, and interactive graphics to create engaging content that simplifies complex financial concepts.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Journalistic Skills: Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities. Ability to present clear, engaging, and accurate content for diverse audiences.
  • Economic & Business Knowledge: Strong understanding of financial principles, local economic issues, and business trends, with the ability to translate them into practical advice for readers.
  • Research & Analytical Skills: Proven ability to conduct thorough research, analyze economic data, and identify trends.
  • Multimedia Proficiency: Experience with content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and multimedia tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills for conducting interviews and presenting information.
  • Time Management & Adaptability: Ability to meet deadlines, juggle multiple stories, and adapt to changing media landscapes.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong fact-checking and data verification skills to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the content.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Economics, Finance, or a related field. Additional certifications in financial literacy or personal finance are a plus.
  • Experience: Prior experience as a reporter or journalist in business, economics, or finance is preferred.
  • Portfolio: Strong portfolio demonstrating versatility in covering business and economic topics, including reporting on financial literacy, local businesses, or economic policies.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, hybrid position (some office days required).
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for events, interviews, and deadlines.
  • Travel within the Metropolitan Atlanta area for reporting assignments (e.g., community events, expos).

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: $54,000–$59,000 per year.
  • Benefits: 50% healthcare coverage, 401(k) benefits after one year of employment, one week of paid vacation.
  • Moving Stipend: Up to $1,500 to assist with relocation costs, including transportation and moving services.
