NEW ORLEANS – Jalen Hurts has an old soul. He doesn’t listen to much modern music and cares little about the accoutrements of what the game can give to him. Jalen Hurts is only concerned with success on and off the field. However, he took time Tuesday to pay his respects to an artist New Orleans lovingly embraced: Frankie Beverly.
“Well, that’s something that I’ve thought a lot about,” Hurts said. “I’ve thought a lot about that. Just knowing what he meant to the city, you would have thought he was from New Orleans. Him coming to the EssenceFest a good bit. But I know he’s here in spirit, and definitely has always had a special place in my heart. He’ll continue to have a special place.”
Meanwhile, Hurts main catch phrase is “keeping the main thing, the main thing“. During his media session Monday night, he extolled the values of faith, which is one of those main things.
“I think faith is the center of everything that you do,” Hurts explained. “Just being grounded, being grounded and being rooted in that. John 13:7 has always been my favorite scripture. Jesus replied, “you may not know now, but later you understand.” It’s always been one of my favorite verses.”
Hurts also expressed how financial literacy impacts him as a player, even though he learned those lessons as a child.
“I’ll tell you this: as a kid, I’d always get gifts, and I’d always get gift cards and money,” Hurts said. “And on Christmas, all these holidays and stuff, and I never wanted anything. I wasn’t really ever a needy person. So, I just started saving so that’s always kind of been my mentality: get what you get what you need, and kind of don’t abuse it a little bit. You know, just because you can get it doesn’t mean you need it. So it’s always been my approach with a lot of things.”
