“Good morning. How can we help you?”

“Scrambled eggs with cheese and turkey bacon, please.” The parent of a 2nd grader at Kipp Strive Academy orders breakfast for her family.

“Sure thing,” says the cashier.

This exchange takes place at Augie’s Cafe, nestled in the Westview neighborhood. The soul food breakfasts at Augie’s not only nourish the spirit but also serve as a community hub for folks looking to grab a quick bite or even to catch up on some conversations.

Augie’s is named after Augie Johnson, the founder of the R&B group Side Effect. The group featured a young Miki Howard, and their hits included “Always There” and “Open your Heart.”

The restaurant was opened by Augie’s son, Damon Johnson Sr, owner of Fins and Feathers. The eatery replicates the classic diner experience, where artists would gather while traveling on national tours.

The space is cozy, comfortable, and vibrant. Diners can see photos of iconic artists such as DeBarge, Chaka Khan, and Michael Jackson along the walls of the establishment.

The classic breakfast dishes are named after tunes from popular artists. Patrons can enjoy dishes like “Off the Wall,” a salmon and grits dish, or “Never Too Much,” a dazzling French toast platter with breakfast sides.

Augie’s serves breakfast, cocktails, and brunch.
