Grammy award-winning artist Victoria Monét lit up the P&G stage on Day 2 of One Musicfest.
Donning an 80s-style monochromatic bedazzled pinstripe trench coat with a fedora and a pimp cane gripped in her hand, the crowd became her captivated audience from the first notes of her hit, “Alright.” With the backdrop of a stage decorated with greenery to resemble a forest, the singer/songwriter welcomed fans into her domain of a jungle with slick vocals and even slicker moves as she moved across the stage like the Jackson siblings in her opening number.
Monét’s only break during her 45-minute set was multiple dance breaks that transitioned her into hit after hit from her albums “Jaguar” and “Jaguar II.” If her music videos didn’t convince you of her prowess in dance, her live performances while singing live will, and while it’s easy to clump in many of the stars in music today as a lesser version of their predecessors, It’s clear to see that Monét is a master of her craft and a student of the greats.
Known for her unique take on R&B that blends classic R&B with pop, dancehall, funk, hip-hop, soul, and blues, she took the crowd on an exploration of love and empowerment with the retro feel that she wears like a custom-made outfit. Just the day before, her collaborators and one of her biggest influences Earth Wind & Fire rocked the stage. Monét performed her collaboration with the group, “Hollywood,” helped by her daughter Hazel.
Backed by an all-Black band, she also performed popular songs such as “Coastin,” “Party Girls,” “Moment,” and “Smoke.” She ended the night by fitting on a snapback hat to perform her Grammy-nominated song and viral hit “On my Mama.”
She did look fly. She did look good. And we did wish we could touch her swag.
