If you bought a new home in Atlanta last year, now is the time to file for a Homestead Exemption in your county. This can save you thousands of dollars in property taxes! Looking for more information on how to apply? Here are some helpful tips to get you started and links to the appropriate websites from counties such as Cobb, Cherokee, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett and Paulding.
When you apply for a homestead exemption, it provides three basic protections:
- Provides an exemption from property taxes, which can be applied to a home
- Prevents the forced sale of a home to meet the demands of creditors
- Provides the surviving spouse with shelter
Some states automatically apply this exemption; however, in the state of Georgia, you must apply for a homestead exemption during the first year of residence in your primary home. The best part? You only have to apply once! Along with your application, you must submit a copy of your Georgia driver’s license, social security number and registration for vehicles owned or registered in your name.
To simplify the application process, we’ve narrowed down the key dates and details for these Georgia counties. This information and more can be found on each county’s website. You should also check with your tax center to ensure you receive the most up-to-date information.
