CONYERS, GA—Conyers City Council member-elect Sherri Washington will be sworn in  on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 6 p.m., at Conyers City Hall, 901 O’Kelly St., Conyers. Washington was the clear front runner of the three-way race on Nov. 4, capturing 63.89 percent(559 votes) for the District 2, Post 2 seat.

Washington will begin her term immediately having been elected to fill the remainder of the term of Connie Alsobrook, who stepped down from her second 4-year-term, which began in January 2025, to overwhelmingly win the office of mayor on Nov. 4 with 68.4 percent (1,403 votes).  Alsobrook and Anthony Garcia Pacheco, a newcomer who was unchallenged for the District 1 Council seat, are expected to take the oath of office in early January 2026.

Washington said Rockdale County Chief Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten, Rockdale County’s first African American magistrate judge,  will perform her swearing-in ceremony.

Washington issued the following statement, thanking supporters for her victory.

“I want to thank the residents, my neighbors in the City of Conyers for supporting me and having faith in me to elect me to be your City Council district 2 post 2 representative. I look forward to making a difference in our City. Together we are going to make Conyers an even better place to live, work, and play.

To the other candidates in the race, I want to thank you for being part in making this race one of class. I wish each and every one of you all the best, and congratulate you in running a good race.

My Conyers community, this is just the beginning, together we are going to move this city forward!
