DEKALB COUNTY, GA– DeKalb County Board of Education Member Diijon DaCosta, Sr. has been named the County School Board Member of the Year.

The Georgia Association of Black County Officials(GABCO) honored DaCosta for his outstanding service during GABCO’s President’s Reception celebrating Georgia’s county officials on Dec. 7.

DaCosta is the most senior member of the DeKalb County Board of Education, currently serving as chair of the Board’s Policy Committee. He represents the Stone Mountain and Stephenson community clusters and has been a member of the Board since 2018. Over his tenure, he has held leadership positions as both vice chair and chair. Before joining the Board, he served the DeKalb County School District as an educator and later in the Division of Human Resources.

A graduate of Redan High School, DaCosta continued his studies at Kennesaw State University and later earned an Education Finance Certification from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. He also serves on the National School Boards Association’s National Black Council of School Board Members as the committee representative for the southern region.

“It is a distinct honor to be recognized as the County School Board Member of the Year by the Georgia Association of Black County Officials. As a proud alum of the DeKalb County School District, this acknowledgment carries meaningful weight,” said DaCosta. “I accept it with humility, knowing it reflects the collective efforts of our scholars, families, and educators who work each day to move our district forward. My commitment remains focused on expanding equity and access so that every scholar, regardless of ZIP code, is met with opportunity and support. I appreciate the trust placed in me and will continue to serve with purpose, accountability, and a clear commitment to the success of every child in our community.”

GABCO is a statewide network of elected and appointed Black leaders representing Georgia’s 159 counties. Its mission is to advance equity, economic opportunity, and community leadership through advocacy, professional development, and collaborative governance.
