South DeKalb community groups set March 12 forum on proposed school closures – On Common Ground News

DECATUR, GA—A coalition of South and East DeKalb community organizations will host a community-led forum on the DeKalb County School District’s Student Assignment Project (SAP) and the potential impact of proposed school closures across the county.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 12, 6 p.m., at Peace Baptist Church, 4000 Covington Highway in Decatur.

The forum is being organized by The Rockbridge Coalition, SDIAE (South DeKalb Improvement Association for Education), the South DeKalb Coalition, East DeKalb Community Coalition, The People’s Agenda, and other civic partners. School district officials are expected to attend.

The DeKalb County School District is currently reviewing possible changes to school boundaries and facilities as part of the Student Assignment Project. Among the proposals under consideration is the closure or consolidation of up to 27 schools due to declining enrollment and shifting demographics. Community leaders say the decisions being considered could have long-term impacts on neighborhoods, families, and the stability of local communities.

The Rockbridge Coalition, a network of HOA leadership across 46 neighborhoods covering approximately 8,400 households, is helping lead the effort to inform and engage residents across the South DeKalb area.

“Schools play a critical role in the stability of our neighborhoods and the future of our children,” said Lance Hammonds, chair of the Rockbridge Coalition. “This meeting is about making sure the community understands the issues, has access to information, and has a meaningful opportunity to be part of the conversation.”

Discussion topics at the forum will include the potential closing of 27 schools, declining enrollment trends across the district, possible alternatives and solutions, repurposing underutilized school buildings, and maintaining quality education for DeKalb students.

The event is open to the public, and parents, residents, educators, and community leaders are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.
