DEKALB COUNTY, GA – The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will host a series of community engagement meetings to present the Student Assignment Project (SAP) Round 2 Scenarios and gather public feedback.
The project, which includes scenarios to close several schools due to declining enrollment and repurpose others, is designed to address maximize resources, and ensure long-term academic sustainability for students across DeKalb County, officials said.
Round 2 community meetings will be held March 23—30, 6 p.m. The in-person workshops will bring families and stakeholders together in classroom settings within their high school cluster to review the scenarios in more detail, discuss potential impacts, and explore ideas directly with members of the SAP Committee.
Virtual information sessions and online feedback also will be available for families and stakeholders to review the scenarios and share input. The virtual community information sessions will be held March 23 and March 27 (registration required).
District officials said that over the past several weeks, thousands of people across DeKalb participated in Round 1 of the process to help shape the work ahead. The feedback helped the district and the SAP Committee better understand the priorities, concerns, and desires of community members, said DCSD Interim Superintendent of Schools Norman C. Sauce.
“Our planning team carefully reviewed the comments, questions, and ideas shared during the first phase of engagement,” said Sauce. “What you will see in Round 2 reflects what we heard from the community as well as the data and analysis guiding this work. Right now, the focus of the project is on our buildings and how they are being used across the district.”
The SAP Committee comprises 150 community members who have been guiding this work for nearly two years.
“We recognize and do talk about the fact that currently there are disparities from school-to-school, whether it is outcomes, access to programming, or facilities, that are too great,” said SAP Committee member Elizabeth Mitchel. “We need to close those gaps across the county, and this our opportunity to do it.”
