Tony Brown disqualified in Georgia’s Special Election U.S. House 13th District – On Common Ground News

ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA–Democrat Tony Brown has been disqualified as a candidate for the Special Election for Georgia’s 13th Congressional House District, the seat formerly held by the late Rep. David Scott, On Common Ground Newshas learned.  

Scott, who served 12 consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, died on April 22 at the age of 80 while seeking re-election to a 13th term as congressman.  In addition to Rockdale, the 13th Congressional House District includes portions of DeKalb, Newton, Clayton, Gwinnett and Henry counties. 

Rockdale County Supervisor of Elections Cynthia Willingham posted the disqualification notice in her July 6 online elections update. The notice from Georgia’s Secretary of State’s Office became  effective June 30, 2026. No further information was provided on why Brown was abruptly disqualified. His name was already on the ballot and apparently could not be removed before the early voting period began on Monday, July 6.

State Rep. Rhonda Taylor, who represents Rockdale County, also posted in her July 6 online newsletter that Brown has been disqualified from the race. Taylor told On Common Ground News during a telephone call late Monday that she did not have any additional information about his removal from the race. 

With Brown’s disqualification, there are now five candidates running in the nonpartisan race including Everton “E.J. Blair (Democrat); Caesar Gonzales(Republican); Carlos More Moore(Democrat); Fayth Park(Republican); and Marcye Scott,(Dmocrat), daughter of the late David Scott  Early voting for the special election began on Monday, July 6.  The last day to vote is July 28 to fill the 13th Congressional House District unexpired term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2026. 

An elected candidate to fill the full new two-year term will be decided in the Nov. 3, 2026 General Election between Representative Jasmine Clark (D) and Jonathan Chavez (R).
