Atlanta’s trees don’t put on a slow, polite show. They go all at once. One week the canopy is green, and the next it’s burning orange and gold from Kennesaw to Stone Mountain.

You don’t have to drive to the North Georgia mountains to see it. These seven trails sit close enough to the city for a morning trip, with views that make the early alarm worth it. Around metro Atlanta, color usually builds through late October and peaks in early November.

1. Arabia Mountain View Trail (2.3 miles)

East of the city in Lithonia, Arabia Mountain looks like another planet: wide granite outcrops, small pools, and low plants that turn red in the fall. Golden meadows and the lake at the base reflect the color back at you. Easy, open, and great for photos.

2. Kennesaw Mountain Trail (2.4 miles)

Climb to the summit at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and you’ll see Marietta, the Atlanta skyline, and Stone Mountain spread out in fall color. The climb is steep in spots, but short. Weekends get busy, so go early, and check the park’s site for parking fees.

3. Sweetwater Creek Yellow Trail (3.4 miles)

West of the city, Sweetwater Creek State Park pairs rushing water, rocky bluffs, and the ruins of a Civil War-era mill. The Yellow Trail crosses a steel bridge with a great view of the color along the creek banks. State parks charge a daily parking fee.

4. Stone Mountain Walk-Up and Cherokee Trails (2 to 7 miles)

The Walk-Up Trail is short and steep, about a mile to the top, with a big payoff at the summit. Want more miles and fewer crowds? The Cherokee Trail loops around the mountain past lake views lined with fall leaves. You’ll need a parking pass to enter the park.

5. Sawnee Mountain Indian Seats Trail (4 miles)

Up in Cumming, Sawnee Mountain Preserve leads to the Indian Seats, a rock ledge with long views of the North Georgia ridgelines. In the fall, those ridges stack up in red, orange, and gold.

6. Gold Branch Trail at Bull Sluice Lake (3.5 miles)

Part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area near Roswell, this one is calm and shady. The water reflects the color, and it’s a good choice for an easy morning walk. Expect a small parking fee.

7. Iron Hill Loop at Red Top Mountain State Park (3.8 miles)

On a peninsula in Lake Allatoona, this wide, mostly flat loop keeps the lake in view almost the entire way. Perfect for families or anyone who wants big scenery without a big climb.

Before You Go

  • Start early. Parking fills fast on peak fall weekends.
  • Layer up. Mornings can be cold and afternoons warm.
  • Bring water and snacks, even on short trails.
  • Watch your footing. Wet leaves on granite get slick.
  • Leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in.

Get outside while the color lasts. It moves fast, and so should you.
